Section 13 – Main Spar – 20 Hours – Complete

A new phase in the assembly has started: The Wings. It started with my favorite activity. Unwrapping all the parts and organizing them onto shelves. It is better than Christmas morning as a kid.

I prepared for this by adding another shelving unit because I guessed (correctly) that there are a lot more parts involved with the Wing Kit versus the empennage.

The first steps involved preparing the Wing Spars. These are two pieces manufactured by VANS. My guess for this is mainly due to the huge rivets installed along with length of the spars. I wanted to be careful with this because I certainly did not want to pay for a replacement spar due to a mistake. I have no idea what one costs.

Mid Section update – I had an unused TV lying around so it became a candidate for a shop TV. I can now watch youtube videos of Oshkosh landings while I build.

Most of this section involved countersinking holes. Perhaps I will count them up someday but there were at least hundreds.

After countersinking, about 89 Nut plates were installed. Oh wait, I forgot to mention, on the Wing Section, everything is done twice – one for each wing. For now, I plan to do the two wings in tandem which means I will complete one step on a wing and then do the same to the other. So, this means, 178 Nut plates were installed on both spars.

After the nut plates were installed, I countersunk the screw holes over the nut plates. Most of these screw holes are for the leading edge fuel tanks which will attach to the wing. Some of remaining the screw holes are for access plates over the wings. Yes, there is some priming going on here as well.
