The Year in Past
Yeah, I know, it has been a heck of a long time. Nearly a year in fact. So, lets bring you up to date. After the first flight, I proceeded to fly off the Phase 1 testing while following the EAA Flight Test Manual. Rather than just fly for 40 hours with no goals, the […]
First Flight
After returning from Oshkosh, I was anxious to get the airplane into the air. Following the airworthiness inspection, I spent a few days putting everything back together (inspection panels, interior) which took more time than expected. I decided to wait until the following Saturday in order to fly early in the morning to avoid other […]
Airworthiness Inspection
On Aug 4, 2024, a Designated Airworthiness Inspector made a visit to the hangar to look over the airplane and ultimately issue an Airworthiness Certificate. The process went very smooth although I made sure everything was organized and ready. I was proud to finally say “I built an airplane!.
Final Assembly – About 120 hours
At this point in the build, I am pretty much done with the plans, and everything from this point on is getting the airplane through its final assembly steps, testing, and finally, a airworthiness inspection. My photo taking has very much suffered as a result, and I have fewer to share. I have spent the […]
Section 41 – Wing Attachment – 4 hours
Now that I am safely in the hangar, I officially started the final assembly. The first task was to organize the hangar but I also managed to attach the tail feathers the day after the move. It is looking more like an airplane and less like a guppy. The following weekend, I followed the plans […]
The Big Move – 8 hours
Well, the day finally arrived. It was time to move to the hangar. I pretty much had done everything I could to the airplane in the garage so it was time to make it the airplane in the hangar. I hired a local tow truck operator, and I couldn’t have been more pleased with how […]
Interior Installation – 24 hours
About a year ago, I ordered a complete interior package from Classic Aero. This is a company who specializes in interiors for Vans aircraft. From seeing other examples, the quality was top notch, and you can customize the colors as you wish. The interior parts arrived in February 2024, and I immediately started the install […]
Exhaust Installation- 4 hours
I originally ordered the exhaust as part of the Vans Aircraft kit. However, due to the Chapter 11 proceedings currently going on at Vans (they appears to be climbing out of it successfully), the exhaust system was continually delayed with no word on delivery. Plus, the price about doubled. So, I went to a small […]
Panel Installation – 200 hours
Several months ago I talked about the process of designing and planning the avionics panel. I also started the wiring of the panel harness which was then put aside until I could buy all the panel components. Well, today I can say all that work is complete. The all Garmin panel is up and running, and everything seems […]
