Section 33 – Rudder and Brake Systems – 24 Hours

The hours spent on this included the painting I showed in Section 32.

I started this section by having the rudder pedal parts powder coated red. I think it will look pretty cool with the white rudder bars and the black floor and side panels.

You might notice some paint spray on the firewall. I later learned that perhaps this is not a good idea because if there is an engine fire, the paint might emit fumes. I removed the paint off the stainless steel quite easily. At least now, if there is an engine fire, I won’t have to make a choice between burning to death or choking to death.

You might also see some springs on the brake master cylinders. This is a mod frequently recommended by other builders. Basically it keeps the brake pedals retracted and not causing the brake pedals to drag. Incidentally, brake dragging is another possible source of a fire.

The hydraulic brake lines were added which I have to admit looks kind of weird. The lines are basically out in the open ready to be kicked by myself and passengers. I guess 10,000 RV’s flying proves this design is ok. You can see here that the firewall is mostly clear of paint.

One last step in this section is putting 4 bolts into an adele clamp which holds the plastic tubing that covers the rudder cable as it passes up into the cabin. This was the single most PITA step of the build so far. It took 4 hours to put in 4 bolts and nuts. I will not try to relive this and describe how it went but I eventually learned that safety wiring the adele clamps made them stay closed enough to attach the nuts.

Terrific. The complexity is pretty special. Way to go
